Rob Mare has been elected President-Elect of the Population
Association of America for 2009. This means that he will serve as PAA
president in 2010.
The PAA President is responsible for organizing the PAA meetings,
running PAA (along with the Board of Directors and staff), and
representing PAA in many venues.
Gary J. Gates is a senior research fellow at the Williams Institute at the UCLA School of Law and the coauthor of "The Gay and Lesbian Atlas." He is widely acknowledged as the nation's leading expert on the demography and geography of the gay and lesbian population. His doctoral dissertation included the first significant research exploring characteristics of same-sex couples using U.S. Census data. He has since published extensively on the demographic and economic traits of the lesbian and gay population. His work has been featured in many national and international media outlets, including the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, USA Today, the Financial Times, and National Public Radio.

Congratulations to Tara McKay!
Tara's abstract for the 2008 APHA Meeting has been selected as the winner of the award "Excellence in Abstract Submission among Student APHA Members." Tara is also the winner of the 2008 Rosenstein Student Scholarship for HIV/AIDS.
Elizabeth (Libbie) Stephenson, UCLA's Data Archivist, with whom CCPR works closely, has received an award for her article about data literarcy. Every year Emerald invites each journal’s Editorial Team to nominate what they believe has been that title’s Outstanding Paper and up to three Highly Commended Papers from the previous 12 months. Libbie's article entitled Incorporating data literacy into undergraduate information literacy programs in the social sciences: A pilot project published in Reference Services Review has been chosen as a Highly Commended Award Winner at the Literati Network Awards for Excellence 2008.

Data Archive Librarian Honored Libbie Stephenson, director of the Social Science Data Archives in the Institute for Social Science Research, received the William H. Flanigan Award for distinguished service from the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR). As part of its mission to support the social sciences, ICPSR honors individuals who have distinguished themselves in their service to the social science community.
